stress relief

Your adrenal glands produce hormones that underpin your body’s ability to cope with both physical and mental stress. Life events aside, these stressors can also come in the everyday guise of nervous tension, chronic worry & anxiety, even over-training. Over-reliance on caffeine and other such stimulants also tax and stress your adrenals. Adaptogens are often described as ‘herbal pharmaceuticals’ or ‘stress-hackers’ as they work to counteract the effects of stress on your body.

WHAT ARE ADAPTOGENS

Stress can lead to both physical and psychological changes in the body. Adaptogens work to counter these harmful effects with their stimulant properties. ZEN is a potent food supplement that combines some of the most powerful adaptogens on the planet to help you balance hormones, feel more in control and better manage your body’s daily stress response. ZEN combines:

Ashwagandha

Astragulus

Maca Root

Schisandra Berry

Liquorice Root

Reishi Mushroom

Rhodiola Rosea

Turmeric

Panax Ginseng

Gotu Kola

These potent herbals help your body adapt and responds to it’s needs and regulates the system both up or down, as to what is required in that moment. The very nature of adaptogenic herbs is to help you “adapt” to your environment, alongside normalising and regulating your body’s functioning. Nature is pretty clever.

    ADAPTOGEN BENEFITS

Research has found adaptogens benefit the body by:

    Anti-fatigue effect

    Anti-depressant effect

    Nervous system stimulant

    Neuro-protective properties

Adaptogens were first researched during World War II when scientists were looking to develop a ‘Superhero’ pill to enable pilots to fly faster and for longer.

Military studies on one such stimulant, the Schizandra Berry found in ZEN, found that these berries reduced hunger, thirst and exhaustion and improved night vision too.

    ASHWAGANDHA ROOT

Ashwagandha, one of the most powerful herbs in Ayurvedic healing, used since ancient times and is most well-known for its restorative benefits. In Sanskrit, ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” indicating that the herb imparts the vigour and strength of a stallion, and has traditionally been prescribed to help people strengthen their immune system after an illness. Ashwagandha is often referred to as “Indian ginseng” because of its rejuvenating properties. Traditionally, it has been prescribed as a nerve tonic and adaptogen – an agent which helps the body adapt to various emotional and physical stressors. It is a highly effective remedy to help reduce stress and anxiety, by lowering cortisol levels and mimicking the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.

    ASTRAGALUS ROOT

For more than 2,000 years, Astragalus has been one of the 50 elite herbs most frequently used in the Traditional Chinese Medicine due to its remarkable ability to restore health on virtually every level – physically, energetically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is one of the few herbs referenced in ancient Chinese medical texts as a “Heaven Class” premier herbal medicine for restoring health and rejuvenating the body and mind at the deepest levels. Widely referred to as “the ancient herb of longevity and strength”, a number of studies have shown that certain compounds in Astragalus root have measurable telomerase-stimulating and enhancing effects, which have been linked to increased longevity, anti-aging and DNA repair. Astragalus has also become notable over the years for its powerful immune-boosting properties – studies have shown that regular use of Astragalus root leads to an increase in disease-fighting immune antibodies, stimulation of T-cells (which are powerful immune-regulating white blood cells) and anti-viral properties.

    MACA ROOT

Maca is rich in vitamins A & C plus B2, B6 and niacin and also contains minerals, including zinc, iron, iodine, copper, calcium, potassium & magnesium. As part of the mustard family (along with cauliflower & broccoli) Maca is also rich in beneficial plant sterols which are biochemically related to hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone & testosterone. It also contains healthy fatty acids,  beneficial for the heart, reduce inflammation and help stabilise blood glucose levels. As well as being known for its benefits for energy levels & colonic health, Maca (in particular) is one of the rare plants that can be classified as an ‘herbal adaptogen’. This means it can directly change the balance of your hormones to help you adapt to stress and illness. Your endocrine (hormone) system front line when it comes to handling the effects of stress on your body. So if you’re under chronic stress or suffer from anxiety, the adaptogenic effects of maca can help to reduce some of the load.

    RHODIOLA ROSEA

This herb is an adaptogen, a remedy that helps your body cope with stress, in part by protecting the brain and enhancing resilience. A recent study found that taking rhodiola reduced feelings of stress after just 3 days, with benefits continuing during the four-week study. The medicinal compounds have been used to help treat occasional stress, anxiety, mental and physical fatigue, and depressed mood. It has been shown to stimulate serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine activity; the proper balance of these neurotransmitters is believed to be involved in healthy emotional and neurological functioning.
