DIY Glowing Skin
Coffee and Skin Care
Coffee isn’t just for drinking, those little ground coffee beans are great for your skin care too. A powerful antioxidant and when applied to your skin the coffee beans properties can help shrink blood vessels, boost complexions and help reduce excess water stored in that area.
The Coffee Bean in cosmetics is becoming more and more popular due to its ability to penetrate the skin barrier. It’s often added to anti cellulite products and it also protects the skin against UV radiation and slows down photo-ageing which can make the skin appear younger. The coffee bean can also help reduce inflammation & redness and the appearance of under eye circles.
ANTIOXIDANT As a powerful antioxidant coffee beans help protect your skin from ageing free radical damage. Science has shown that the coffee bean extract can be responsible for skin cell energy preservation.
SUN DAMAGE The coffee bean has been shown to protect against harmful UVB rays and may even protect from UV carcinogens. Another study has shown that caffeine inhibits the DNA damage response thereby protecting the skin against the adverse effects of UVB.
SMOOTH SKIN Promoting smoother & brighter skin, the coffee bean contains qualities that promote tissue repair. Coffee plays a crucial role in regulating cell re-growth resulting in retained hydration, increased collagen and increased skin elasticity.
BOOST CIRCULATION Coffee enhances circulation and leads to healthy energised skin and can effectively reduce swelling and de-puffing. For swollen areas you can make coffee ice cubes and place on the swelling.
Coffee Mask Recipe
For a gentle but effective exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and wake up a tired complexion the DIY coffee mask has become a popular remedy. It can be used to wake up your skin and give it a boost and is especially useful after drinking alcohol when your skin is in need of replenishment.
You can make a coffee face mask by simply mixing ground coffee with milk, or you can also include some of the following ingredients:
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons ground coffee
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1-2 tablespoons of milk as necessary for consistency
- 1 tablespoon brown rice or sugar for additional exfoliant texture
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
RAW HONEY Combine with raw honey for a positively glowing complexion. Honey has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant and healing properties that benefit the skin as a whole. Honey has been used in skin care for a long time to treat eczema and to reduce inflammation. Raw honey is also known to balance bacteria on your skin.
TURMERIC Is also great for giving you a natural glow. Packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it’s known for being healing and cleansing. It has a long list of benefits; such as reducing hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, irritation, and acne. A little goes a long way so you only need a teaspoon and the colour may linger on your skin for a day or so. So don’t leave it on for long.
COCOA Has great antioxidant properties, just as the antioxidant help stop the premature breakdown of cells in plants it does the same for your skin. Antioxidants help protect the skin from free radicals and the signs of ageing.
CITRUS Has shown to help with dark spots on the skin. Use only a small amount in a mask and be sure to apply sunscreen after masking as citric acids, can cause skin irritation when used directly and exposed to sunlight.
YOGHURT Is great for adding moisture to the skin. It can help give your mask a smooth and cooling consistency if desired. If you have any type of dairy intolerance, you can replace it with fresh aloe vera gel, which will offer the same cooling effect.
How to make
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl and immediately apply the mixture to your face. If the mask is too thick, add 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil.
- Buff away dead skin cells with your fingertips in a circular motion.
- Leave on for 20 minutes or until it begins to dry and turn into a thick paste on the skin.
- Once it’s dry, remove with warm water. Rub the mask in circular motions around the face while removing to exfoliate. Use no more than once or twice per week.
Your Skin Is your Largest Organ
Scalp Benefits
Your skin covers your entire body, so what’s good for your skin is also good for your scalp – as don’t forget your scalp is just skin but with more hair follicles. Mix half a cup of ground coffee and massage onto wet hair for 2 minutes before rinsing off with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This will help remove excess product build up and dead skin cells.
Anti-Cellulite Body Scrub
Want to minimise cellulite then coffee helps to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. For a DIY body scrub mix ground coffee with a spoon of olive oil and sugar. Massage in a circular motion.
Skin Brightener
For a radiant and glowing complexion a coffee mask using the ingredients above will give you beautiful healthy skin in just 20 minutes.
Reduce Puffy Eyes
Puffy eyes can be a reflection of toxins and water accumulation in the lymphatic system and are a sign your face could benefit from a mini detox. Coffee is your detox ingredient for reducing facial puffiness and for stimulating your lymph nodes to flush out those toxins. It has a great tightening effect whilst reducing inflammation and redness too.
Coffee boosts circulation with its high antioxidant properties. It helps to shrink blood vessels and reduce puffiness. You can apply ground coffee under the eyes and over the eyelid area for a few minutes and rinse with cold water or alternatively use the ice cube hack.
